Imagine That

The Wall Street Journal‘s Eric Felton asks us to “Imagine If Every Celebrity Had a University.”

You might call it snarky. My favorites are:

The Richard Dawkins Theological Institute.

A rather ordinary modern seminary in that none of the students believes in God. Most popular course: Horology 201—Intermediate watch-making with an emphasis on blindfolded manufacturing techniques. The class will be graded on a Darwinian curve.

And:

University of East Anglia. A wealth of degree offerings in creative writing.

Felton’s piece is prompted by the announcement that Glenn Beck now has his own online university. Felton notes, “Lectures … will be delivered online at Mr. Beck’s website, some by actual professors with actual academic credentials.” Viewers of Beck’s TV show won’t be surprised about that. Lots of experts and academics appear there regularly. I think it’s fascinating that people are so hungry for information about the history and founding ideas of America. If they can get it via Beck’s experts, that’s all to the good.

After all, it’s not good for democracy if we’re reduced to this.
