You Can’t Teach What You Don’t Know

I couldn’t bring myself to post this yesterday. Here’s Jay Leno asking the man-woman-child-and-college-professor on the street exactly what it is that we celebrate on the 4th of July. It’s pretty depressing stuff. And where does that college professor teach?

A few observations:

The narrowing of the curriculum under No Child Left Behind (an unintended consequence, by the way, but we’ll save that for another day) can’t be blamed. Most of the folks interviewed were out of school before NCLB came along.

The only respondent who doesn’t make us cringe is the black grandfather. He was apparently educated in what’s known in many circles today as the bad old days.

To be fair, we don’t know how many better– and possibly much worse–answers were left on the cutting room floor.

We’ve got our work cut out for us.

Some small comfort: The studio audience laughed. I like to think that means most of them knew the correct answers.
